English Language Learners
Holy Spirit has implemented a Kindergarten Sight Word Leveled Reading Pal Program for the past two years. Since 80-90% of our Kindergarteners are English Language Learners (ELLs), we use pictured movement sight word cards from Child 1st Publications called "Snapwords" for clarification, retention, and mastery.

"As the ELL reading specialist at Annunciation Catholic School Holy Spirit, I have received phenomenal leadership from Mr. David Memmer. In just two years, we secured about $20,000 in resources and grants for our ELL department, established the first K-8th ELL resource room within the Catholic Diocese, and implemented ELL services that have shown significant growth in our EL test scores (i.e., WIDA ACCESS proficiency scores) and iReady reading levels."- Nicole Cervone Gish, ELL Reading Specialist
Level 1 Giraffe:
If students can recite levels 1 and 2 without the pictures (24 words), they receive a giraffe reading pal to read to throughout the day.
(This is a soft giraffe slap bracelet.)
Level 2 Bunny:
If students can recite levels 1-4 without the pictures (48 words), they receive a bunny reading pal to read to throughout the day.
(This is a soft bunny slap bracelet.)
Level 3 Axolotl:
If students can recite all levels 1-5 without the pictures (59 words), they receive an axolotl reading pal to read to throughout the day.
(This is a soft axolotl slap bracelet.)
The students can keep the slap bracelets at home or at school, and they are theirs to keep forever. The idea is that every Kindergartener will go home with three reading pals by the end of the year.
